Refugee Resettlement and Placement Program

As an an affiliate agency of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), located in Washington D.C., the IIA and its Refugee Resettlement Department provides services for refugees, victims of trafficking, and other eligible clients.  The International Institute of Akron is the official sponsor for the placement of refugees in the City of Akron area (primarily Summit County, but also in Stark, Medina, Portage, and Mahoning counties.

Sponsorship

The IIA Refugee Resettlement Department provides comprehensive services such as financial support to partially cover refugee expenses, basic necessities and core services.  The goal of sponsorship is to assist refugees to achieve economic self-sufficiency through employment as soon as possible after their arrival to the U.S. The Program is designed as public-private partnership and participation and contribution of the local community is welcome and needed for successful refugee integration into society.

Core Services Provided to Refugees
  • Decent, safe and sanitary housing, utility accounts and telephone line
  • Beds and essential furnishings
  • Airport reception
  • Food and food allowance
  • Clothing
  • Financial assistance
  • Resettlement plan
  • Case management
  • Community orientation
  • Home visits
  • Referrals to appropriate services
  • Coordination of refugee health screening
  • Assistance in applying for and receiving a Social Security Card
  • Assistance in applying for benefits at Summit County Dept. of Job and Family Services
  • Registration of children to local schools
  • Assistance in family reunification
  • Assistance in case transfers
Co-Sponsorship

Co-Sponsorship is offered to any established community group, such as a church congregation or service organization which is willing to provide or ensure the provision of reception and placement supportive services to refugees sponsored by the IIA.

Supportive services are:
  • Assistance in pre-arrival housing preparation
  • Assistance in airport reception
  • Assistance with clothing
  • Assistance in shopping and orientation to local stores
  • Assistance with the bus system
