"The International Institute of Akron’s entryway was filled with at least seven people, some sitting on the bench attached to the wall. I squeezed past the families, nodding hello, and entered the old building on Tallmadge Avenue.
The father on the couch over from me spoke English and mentioned to an employee he needed to sign his wife up for the citizenship test. His daughter, who looked about 4, wore Dora the Explorer sneakers and pink leggings.
I was told this was a very slow day for the office. "

December 2011, Seasons Greetings
The wonderful people down at St. Hilary Parish http://www.sthilarychurch.org/provided hundreds of gifts for our families to enjoy for the upcoming holidays. Throughout the week, IIA employees and volunteers have been delivering the presents door to door.
Raymond Roteain (right), an IIA employee and member of the Mon community here in Akron, stands knocking at the door, in a red Santa hat with a big bag of gifts to pass out. Many thanks to the staff and members at St. Hilary Parish, and to so many others in the Akron area who generously provided donations to our families. Happy Holidays!
December 2011, Refugees Share Their Incredible Stories
Bhim Dhungana (middle) and Pree Pree (right), present their incredible stories at Copley Community Center Friday Dec. 9th, 2011. Both Bhim, a Bhutanese refugee living here in Akron OH, and Pree Pree, a Karen refugee also living here in the Akron area, are a part of the family we have at IIA, and also serve as Interpreters for the institute.

Free Citizenship Classes: Tuesday Mornings and Wednesday Evenings
To assist individuals in passing the citizenship test, the IIA holds a free citizenship class every Wednesday evening, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. and Tuesday mornings, 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at 207 E. Tallmadge Ave. No pre-registration is necessary. For more information, call 330-376-5106, Ext. 15.

IIA is in Need of Starter Housekeeping Kits for Newly Arriving Refugees
By providing housekeeping starter kits to all of our newly arriving refugee families, the IIA ensures that refugees will have a healthy start to their life in Akron. Your contribution of $20 to the Education Department will help us to provide low-cost, "green" cleaning alternatives to our students during our Life Skills Program -Clean and Happy Home.
Items for the housekeeping starter kit include baking soda, spray bottle, white vinegar, rubber gloves, dish soap, green scour pads, bucket, broom and dustpan, and small storage containers. Call 330-376-5106, Ext. 26.
