Q & A
Who are we? International Institutes are non-profit community agencies with a variety of services for foreign-born New Americans. When we opened our doors in 1916, it was primarily to provide English classes to European immigrants. Since then, our services and clients have become more diverse. We offer classes in English and other services. Funding comes from he United Way, federal, state and local contracts and the generosity of private donations.
How can we help you? International Institute Employment Services provide a full range of services at no cost to employers or clients. We offer employers with pre-screened applicants we have met, evaluated and provided with a resume. However, often the most important service we provide employers is after placement, contacting employers and clients alike to ensure communication is strong, and to address potential problems, answer questions and sometimes “little things” like helping clients complete and understand insurance forms. We also provide interpreters for training purposes.
Who are our clients? All of our clients are legally and permanently in the U.S., with full employment authorization and permanent residency. Some of our clients are refugees, fleeing persecution in their homeland and identified by the United Nations to be unable to return to their homeland without fear of persecution. The U.S. State Department asks agencies like ours to resettle these families and provides some funding to get them their first apartment, doctors’ appointments and place them in a job. The IIA provides an orientation class called "Working in the US", including explaining their rights and responsibilities as workers and employer expectations. The goal is to provide jobs as quickly as possible, ensuring that in the first few months they are in the U.S., they become financially self-sufficient.
Why hire immigrants? Immigrants have a strong work ethic and are very reliable. They rarely miss a day of work, and are the first to arrive and are more than willing to work extra hours if needed. Many of our clients have stayed employed at the same company for many years.
