Parents and Children Together (PACT): Promoting Family Literacy and Future New American Youth
Middle and high school can be difficult to navigate for event the most well-adjusted adolescent; for a refugee, the challenges can be more numerous and extreme. In addition to the usual concerns (peer pressure, sex, and drugs) refugees face an unfamiliar environment with rules not fully understood because of cultural/language barriers. Further, their parent's ability to assist can be limited by many of the same factors.
As a comprehensive after-school and summer program for low-income refugee adolescents and their parents, Parents and Children Together (PACT) provides adolescents the support and opportunities they need to succeed academically. In addition, PACT prepares adolescents and their parents to more effectively navigate the school system.
Mentoring is available from qualified, professional volunteer instructors on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:00-4:30 p.m. during the academic school year. Summer classes are held two afternoons per week in August. The program is free to refugee youth and their parents.
For more information, contact Svetla Ganeva-Morrison, or call 330-376-5106, Ext. 21.
