International Institute
of Akron to Receive Federal Grant for Citizenship Education Program
$78,173 Awarded from
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Akron, Ohio - The International Institute of Akron has been
selected to receive a grant totaling $78,173 as
part of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services’ (USCIS) Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 Citizenship and Integration
Grant Program. USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas
today announced that 75 organizations from 27 states and the District of Columbia will
receive a total of $7.8 million in grant funding to promote citizenship
education and immigrant integration in communities across the country.
The International Institute of
Akron has offered English for Speakers of Others Languages (ESOL) programs and
citizenship services to refugees and immigrants for over 90 years. With this
grant, the International Institute will expand its current ESOL Civics
program. Civics-focused curriculum will help
eligible refugees and immigrants improve their English and civics knowledge in
preparation for becoming U.S. citizens. The agency will also expand its Naturalization
Application Services by offering bi-monthly evening Citizenship Assistance
Workshops in which Accredited Immigration Counselors assist individuals with
the federal Naturalization Application.
Through this competitive
grant program, USCIS seeks to expand citizenship preparation programs for lawful permanent
residents (LPRs) to ensure that
those committed to the goal of U.S. citizenship receive the support they need
to be successful. Increased opportunities and additional resources in
communities will help LPRs improve their English language skills and knowledge
of U.S.
history and government as they prepare for citizenship.
