Education
The primary goal of the Education Department is to help students from other language backgrounds learn and use English effectively so that they can become self-sufficient, productive members of the community.
Our learners, both immigrants and refugees, come from around the world: Brazil, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, China, Colombia, El Salvador, Germany, Honduras, India, Japan, Korea, Liberia, Mexico, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Uzbekistan. Students range from young adults to seniors and have diverse backgrounds.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Life Skills and Civics Program
The adult ESOL Life Skills and Civics Program offers courses for individuals learning English at various levels of proficiency. The primary goal of the program is to help students acquire a working knowledge of the English language in order to gain employment, achieve self-sufficiency, adjust quickly to life in Akron, and become future engaged citizens.
In addition, the Education Department is committed to offering a diverse selection of educational opportunities such as specialized workshops and field trips that help students better function in the community as students, workers, parents, and citizens.
We offer classes 15 weeks, 4-8 hours per week, 3 times per year at the following levels:
Beginner (2/3)
Intermediate (4/5)
Advanced (6)Classes are taught by qualified, professional paid and volunteer instructors.
All foreign-born adults* are eligible to enroll. The cost of the course is $65 which includes textbooks and classroom supplies such as pens, pencils and paper.
*For refugee students, ESOL classes are paid for by the State of Ohio Refugee Resettlement Program. Refugee clients are eligible for a period of 5 years after their initial U.S. arrival date.

New Arrivals English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program
Designed to meet specific needs of our refugee clients, the Six-Month Intensive ESOL Program offers free classes and workshops to adults living in Summit County over the age of 18 who are not enrolled in a public school system. Our primary goal is to assist these individuals with becoming self-sufficient and workplace ready through a variety of reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities.
Classes meet 5 days per week at various times throughout the year. Only those refugee students who have lived in Summit County for less than 6 months are eligible for this program. Classes are free and funded by the State of Ohio Refugee Resettlement Program.
Workplace Ready Program
Designed to help students learn the necessary skills needed to obtain a job and become self-sufficient, the Workplace Ready Program covers topic such as computers, literacy, resume writing, job retention, work specific vocabulary, and interviewing. The program is free to low income foreign born individuals, and meets according to participants' needs and schedule.
Clean and Happy Home
Clean and Happy Home is a four-part series that uses practical examples to demonstrate the tools and cleaning products necessary to keep a clean and healthy apartment. The workshop is conducted in the refugees' home within the first month of arrival.
